Long Way Round

A delightful sense of humor and wonder maintained by actors Ewan McGregor and Charley Boorman make this long, long motorcycle journey a captivating, entertaining experience, at least for the first two hour long episodes available for review.

Buddies McGregor and Boorman star in and co-produce this adventure series that chronicles their four-month, 20,000-mile trek across Europe, the Ukraine, Kazakhstan, Mongolia and eventually the United States.

The richness and frozen desolation of the landscapes, plus encounters with local people who sometimes offer remarkable hospitality, contribute to the possibility that the entire series will be a cool experience for the viewer. Most importantly, the two actors have wisecracks for almost every occasion.

To prepare, Boorman and McGregor take survival training, off-road training courses, first aid instruction and more. Even down to the wire, it’s doubtful whether they’ll leave as planned – one obstacle after another keeps surfacing.

The trek has them hitting areas little seen by Westerners, including a journey through the wastelands of Siberia where the old Soviet Union sent prisoners to make sure they never returned.

Ah, but the Soviets never sent actors with state-of-the-art motorcycle accessories.
